"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered" |
Following last summer's exhibition Grenier du château (Castle Garret) featuring installations in the roof gallery by Annette Messager and Christian Boltanski, the same space is currently taken over in a radically different way with a large-scale installation work by Tobias Rehberger. Sixty of his lamps have been hung throughout the fifty-meter length of the gallery that stretches under the remarkable timberframe ceiling like an upturned ship's hull, set off at intervals by brick chimneys rising into the castle roof. Tobias Rehberger delights in ambivalent playfulness with design codes, employing a mixture of materials (e.g. neons, various fastening devices, tarpaulin) that imbue his structures with a loosely anachronistic character in the context of this space, a wry humour echoed in the title of the exhibition which is a quote from George Best, star footballer in the sixties, not particularly famous for his reasonable lifestyle. Simultaneously sculpture and interior decoration, poised between the functional and aesthetic, Tobias Rehberger's work is instantly recognisable.
