Situated in a rural area far from any large urban population, the museum has always been keen to involve a broad cross-section of the local community. Experimental outreach projects have brought contemporary art and culture to a number of groups with special needs. Examples include Wednesday workshops in partnership with social services, interventions in hospitals and collaborations with ergotherapists in homes for the elderly. This is a growing sector in the museum's functions and we encourage enquiries from interested individuals or organisations. Since renovation work in 2001, the entire museum is accessible to wheelchair owners and visitors with reduced mobility. |

"Today prepares tomorrow" could be the motto for any contemporary art museum. More than other cultural institutions, a centre showing art produced today, for future generations, automatically has a responsibility towards its youngest visitors. This is why Rochechouart Museum since its inception has been firmly implicated in working with schools and young children. |
Classes of all ages, from infant schools to high schools come to take part in workshops, visits and specifically adapted activities organised in conjunction with their teachers.
Themes in Art and Architecture
Themes naturally cover ideas linked with contemporary art, but the museum's historic setting also supplies ample opportunities for lessons in architecture, history, literature and even physics. Recent reforms in the education system have led us to prepare subjects adapted to pre-defined levels in fine art, sculpture, 3-D space, language, sound and the daily environment.
Cross-subject modules offering a broader approach have also been prepared by our education team. They include subjects such as a study of the object in art history, portraiture and nature.
The museum's education department can also offer teachers sets of study materials (Workshop Set / Collection Set) for use in the classroom either before or after visits.
Further information, worksheets and documents related to educational activities can be downloaded directly from this website.

All year round, events and activities encourage visitors to discover the museum's collections, exhibitions, castle architecture and environment. Free visits are organised on every first Sunday of the month (except in July and August), and during the summer, parents are welcome to join their children in workshops where they can spend a pleasant moment doing creative activities related to the current exhibitions. Ask at the entrance desk for free explanatory leaflets, children's activity booklets and guided visits. Free visits can be organised for groups of ten or more by simply booking in advance. Finally, Rochechouart Museum puts on regular film projections, conferences and concerts organised both within and outside the museum. |
The town of Rochechouart offers a range of hotels, restaurants and parking facilities. Tourist attractions include many signposted walks in the countryside, Medieval parts of town including a spiral-steepled church, and a geology and meteorite museum.
Next event: Opening night of the next exhibition; 2nd July 2010 at 6pm.
